First grade students at Lincoln Elementary Magnet School presented a check donation for $542 to the Plant City Family YMCA.
First graders at Lincoln Elementary Magnet School in Plant City put their business skills to work, and the proceeds benefited the Plant City Family YMCA. Students in Nicole Johnson’s first grade class recently completed a unit called “How the World Works.” It taught students about wants versus needs, goods and services and how money factors into these choices.
To learn more about the process first hand, the entire first grade created a mini business of selling candy grams over the holidays. The students advertised their product, produced the product and provided the service of delivering the product. When the project was completed, they had made a profit of $542!
During the unit, they learned some people have very little money, making it hard for them to do things in the community. “That is why we want to help our community,” says first grader Rosalie Arias. “We learned your organization (the Y) helps kids that do not have enough money to pay for activities and sports. So we want to help you help them,” she shared proudly, “kids helping kids!”
The first graders invited staff and board members of the Plant City Family YMCA to the school for a check presentation and a few photos. Paul Conley, Executive Director of the Plant City Family YMCA, was on hand to accept the check, “What a moment,” he said “what a lesson from these kids to all of us.”
The Plant City Family YMCA intends to use the funds to help provide scholarships for children interested in participating in the Y’s sports programs.
