Gymnastics and Tumbling
The Tampa Y offers preschool and recreational gymnastics classes, tumbling classes and competitive gymnastics teams at the Bob Sierra Youth and Family Center and North Brandon Family YMCA.
Kids and teens of all ages, skill and ability can participate in gymnastics classes! The Y's trained and experienced coaches and instructors have carefully developed exercises, drills and routines appropriate for every age, ability and skill level. The gymnastics staff will determine the correct class or team for your child athlete!
The Tampa Y ensures the gym is a positive, fun and safe place for youth to learn and develop self-discipline. Gymnastics coaches support and provide opportunities for each athlete to improve their skills. Gymnasts will experience fun, appropriately challenging activities with encouragement from their coaches.
In recreational gymnastics classes at the Tampa Y, participants will begin learning the basic skills in gymnastics events, including vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor, rings, pommel horse, parallel bars, high bar and vault. Flexibility and strength training are an integral part of each 55-minute class. Gymnasts typically complete four physical circuits, a fun game, exercise or foam pit activity each class to improve strength and flexibility.
The Preschool Gymnastics Class is a structured gymnastics class with age-appropriate warm-up and gymnastics circuits. Participants must be comfortable attending class on their own (ages 3 and up). Parent and child classes are available for toddlers of walking age to 4 years old.
- The South Tampa Y offers Preschool Tumbling.
School Age Gymnastics Classes
Kids and teens with no prior gymnastics experience can start in the 55-minute beginner gymnastics class. Participants will learn gymnastics basics on all apparatus, including proper form and gymnastics fundamentals.
Intermediate gymnastics classes are designed for gymnasts who have mastered basic skills and ready for a new challenge. Classes are 55 minutes and consist of four physical circuits and end with a game, exercise or foam pit activity. Gymnasts build their skills and learn new tricks.
After gymnasts have mastered the skills in intermediate gymnastics, they can progress to the advanced class and train new challenges. Gymnasts will work to prepare for the competitive team on all four Women’s Junior Olympic Events. Advanced gymnastics is a pre-team level for those who wish to join the competitive team or work on and advance their skills. The two-hour class allows more time for gymnasts to work on and perfect their skills. The advanced class is by staff recommendation only.
From basic skills to advanced flips and twists, the Tampa Y tumbling classes is focused on a gymnast’s tumbling performance. Tumbling classes reinforce floor routine and tumbling basics by enhancing flexibility and performing drills. Classes are 55 minutes each, and a favorite class among gymnasts who want to enhance their skills in addition to cheer and gymnastics classes.
