Recently, the Gymnastics program at our YMCA Camp Sierra location was generously gifted 23 gently used leotards from two 8th-grade students at Carrollwood Day School.

Both students are highly accomplished, competitive gymnasts from a nearby gym who understand firsthand the dedication, confidence and discipline the sport requires.

Julia Burkowsky, Program Director – Gymnastics, Cheer Dance and Martial Arts at the Tampa YMCA, shared that the girls were asked to complete a community service project through school. Inspired by their own gymnastics’ experiences, they decided that collecting and donating gently used leotards would be a meaningful way to give back to athletes and a sport that helped shape them on and off the mat.

For these young leaders, the donation was more than providing athletic apparel; it was about supporting the next generation of gymnasts and ensuring they have the tools they need to feel confident and empowered when they step into the gym.

The Tampa YMCA’s gymnastics program serves youth of all ages and skill levels, offering a welcoming environment where children can build strength, coordination, confidence and resilience. Through recreational classes, developmental programs and competitive team opportunities like Top Flight Gymnastics, the YMCA emphasizes not only athletic development but also character, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Our coaches are committed to helping each gymnast reach their full potential while fostering a positive, supportive experience.

We are incredibly grateful to these two students for their thoughtfulness and leadership. Their generosity reflects the YMCA's core values, where youth development, leadership and service to others are at the heart of everything we do. Seeing students at such a young age recognize the importance of giving back is a powerful reminder of the impact community programs like the YMCA can have on shaping character and compassion.
