For a decade now, a humble but mighty vehicle has been rolling through the streets of Tampa Bay, delivering more than just fresh fruits and vegetables. The Tampa YMCA’s Veggie Van has been serving up nourishment, dignity and connection to neighborhoods that need it most.

What started in 2015 as a bold idea to tackle food insecurity has grown into a trusted community staple. From just five original stops, the Veggie Van now visits 21 neighborhoods every week, with 11 locations dedicated specifically to seniors.

“The Veggie Van is more than a mobile market. It’s a symbol of equity and care,” says Elizabeth Roman, Senior Director of Mobile Programs for the Tampa YMCA. “It’s about meeting people where they are and making wellness accessible for everyone.”

While the Veggie Van’s 10-year journey is worth celebrating, the YMCA is already looking toward the future. As part of the continued mission to support community wellness, two new mobile initiatives are preparing to launch in 2026: Pound of Fresh and Y on the Fly.

“These programs will help us reach even more people and offer new ways to support healthy living in our neighborhoods,” Elizabeth shares. “Stay tuned, there’s more to come!”
