There sure is a lot of excitement in the growing Southern Hillsborough County community for the Spurlino Family YMCA at Big Bend Road! Hundreds of people are joining the Y in preparation for the Tampa Y’s newest family facility in 18 years. New members are enjoying their access to 12 other Tampa Y locations while they await for the new Spurlino Y to open at 9650 Old Big Bend Road in Riverview this January.   The Y is excited to provide much-needed services to this underserved part of Hillsborough County. Such services build character and confidence in our children, enable families to spend quality time together and provide a supportive environment where everyone - regardless of age, income or background - can come together to improve their quality of life.   Nine-year-old Xander Schrier plays soccer at the Spurlino Y and is keeping a close eye on the construction. “I am so glad they are having good progress on it because I cannot wait for that place to open,” says Xander. “You have to make sure you’re exercising a few times a day so the YMCA really helps that.” Come January, the Spurlino Y will greet his family with 32,500 square feet of indoor space plus an outdoor aquatic center complete with a lap pool and family fun pool offering a zero-depth entry and fun play features.   The new Y will offer a state-of-the art wellness center complete with top-notch equipment, innovative fitness technology, an indoor cycling studio and two group exercise rooms. Programs include personal/group training, a diabetes prevention program, a cancer survivor program, active older adult programming, health education seminars and other social events.   For the kids, the Spurlino Y currently offers youth soccer, basketball and summer camp. Those programs will continue and when the new Y opens, members can take advantage of a Stay & Play for children to learn and play while their parents work out, Parents’ Night Out, teen leadership programs, swim lessons, swim teams for all ages and family-friendly events.   The $16.4 million project is possible thanks to the partnership of the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners. A grand opening is planned for January 10, 2019. Click here to learn more about the Spurlino Y.
