Pete Brock is Forever Strong
The Dade City YMCA is in the heart of downtown Dade City, a close-knit community where neighbors know one another. Walk through town and you’ll find a charming square, antique shops, a lunch spot where you’ll become a regular faster than most places, a library and a bookshop – all within walking distance.
Some might call it “sleepy,” but those who live here know that is not entirely true – Dade City is full of activity and stories to go with it. One of those stories belongs to Pete Brock, a longtime Y member whose commitment to healthy living has spanned decades.
This summer, Pete accepted the YMCA’s Forever Strong Wellness Challenge, which encourages older adults to visit the Y at least 10 times each month during June, July and August. Participants typically range in age from 55 to 99. Pete turned 100 years old this past April.
When Pete arrives at the Y, he’s prepared. Tucked inside his duffel bag is a legal pad filled with thoughtful notes and a manila folder containing the day’s workout plan, a routine he’s followed since the 1990s. On the days he’s not working independently, you’ll find him training with Wellness Coach Kasey Stroede..
He’s been a member since the Dade City Y opened its doors. He’s also been a proud Dade City resident since 1952, after serving during the final years of World War II – a feat he mentions offhand.
For Pete, staying active has never been about chasing a number. It’s about maintaining the strength and independence to continue living a healthy life. Over time, the friendships, support and sense of belonging he has found through the YMCA have become just as important as the workouts. On his longevity, he offers this:
“One thing I attribute as much as exercise and nutrition is social relationships,” he says, referencing other members who’ve made sure that Pete always has someone to drive him to the Y. “I enjoy coming here not only because of the exercise, but I enjoy the fellowship, meeting people and chatting.”
After more than seven decades in Dade City and 100 years of life, Pete Brock is Forever Strong: building strength by prioritizing health and staying connected to a community that helps him thrive.
