Do you remember Ellsworth ‘Ell’ Clinton Buell? He is the triathlete who competed for more than a decade until he suffered a massive stroke three years ago.

The stroke affected the entire left side of Ell’s body which prevented his ability to walk. In hopes to improve his mobility, Ell began physical therapy twice a week and took up personal training at Spurlino Family YMCA with trainer Bart Guida.

Ell began his recovery by walking in the studio with a cane, walking in the pool and engaging with weight machines on the gym floor.

Back in 2020, Bart shared, “He has been making great progress, in our walking in the studio, we’re up to four laps around the studio with a cane. He’s up to getting out of the wheelchair, using to get in here and get around quicker to maximize his time, but when he’s here, he walks with a cane generally.”

Accomplishing Goals from 2020

In 2020, Ell’s goals were to be able to walk his daughter down the aisle, compete in a one-mile walk/run and work towards competing in triathlons again.

His trainer is proud to say Ell has achieved two of his goals.

“After a year and a half of hard work and training three days a week, Ell was able to achieve his goal," shares Bart.

“His first goal was to walk his daughter down the aisle for her wedding. I’m happy to say he did that in the fall, and what a beautiful wedding it was.’”

Another goal of his was to finish 2022 by walking a one-mile walk/run event with his lovely wife Layla. In December, he once again achieved the goal.

Ellsworth’s Goals for 2023

  • Attend and participate in a YMCA spin class by June.
  • Learn how to swim again by August.

Bart says Ellsworth is a remarkable individual with a great heart and determination.

“We [the Spurlino Family Y community] are so proud of him.”
