It’s a New Year…and thousands of community members - of all backgrounds and ages - are reaching their full potential and healthy living goals at the new Spurlino Family YMCA at Big Bend Road.   The Tampa YMCA cut the ribbon to its newest family facility in 18 years on Jan. 10. Key donors and county leaders witnessed Y history in the making, including Hillsborough County Commissioner Stacy White who represents the district where the new Spurlino Y is located. “I am ever grateful that the county was able to play a role to bring this to fruition but I would be remiss if I did not recognize the private benefactors who do such good things for this community,” said Commissioner White during a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony.   His colleague, Commissioner Sandy Murman, has championed the project from the start and has been one of the Y’s biggest supporters throughout this entire process. “This project was born out of love for children and families in South Hillsborough County,” said Commissioner Murman. “People in South County have the warmest hearts and they are so excited to have a project like this. This is the cornerstone of South County. This is the foundation of which our families will have their future and I couldn’t have been more proud to have worked on this and to be a part of it.”   After community dignitaries joined Y leaders to cut the ribbon, more than 600 guests participated in the grand opening celebration full of fun family games, arts & crafts, a DJ pool deck party, complimentary food truck tastings and Publix Aprons Cooking School samples.   The Tampa Y is truly grateful for the Spurlino Family for making the new Y possible through their generous namesake gift and commitment to local residents. The project would also not be possible without the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioner’s generous contributions of land and funds.   Click here to see all the fun photos captured during the grand opening.
