New Riding Arena Opens at YMCA Camp Cristina
September 14th marked the opening of the AdventHealth Riverview Riding Arena, a new shaded horseback riding arena at YMCA Camp Cristina. The addition is already making a positive impact on both the horses and their riders.
“Having a shaded space has been a game changer for our programs. It helps keep our horses and riders comfortable, which lets us spend more time on learning, connection and horsemanship,” says YMCA Camp Cristina Horseback Riding Coordinator, Channing Larson.
Larson leads the Tampa Y’s horseback riding program, which serves as an accessible entry point into the equestrian world for individuals who may face barriers to participating in traditional riding barns. Open to all ages and abilities, the program teaches the fundamentals of Western riding while fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of horses. Participants develop riding skills through steering exercises, pole work and introductory jump training, among other activities.
The opening of the new riding arena creates even more opportunities for the community to engage in horsemanship, which Larson emphasizes is about more than just riding.
“Our goal with the horseback riding program is to teach much more than just riding skills.”
That includes foundational skills like haltering, tacking and understanding equine body language. The program begins with ground-based relationship building, helping nervous students overcome mental barriers before eventually mounting and riding. Through horsemanship, participants develop skills like responsibility, confidence and adaptability. For instance, Larson points to young riders learning to adjust their cues to different horse personalities, from the energetic Fish to the more laid-back Cooper and Virginia.
She also highlights another unexpected lesson horses have taught her over the years, one she now shares with her students.
“Selflessness is a big one I’ve learned with horses…to be in tune with what’s really important,” says Larson.
The new riding arena was made possible by AdventHealth Riverview, whose donation will support YMCA Camp Cristina’s horseback riding program for years to come.
