A Place to Learn, Grow and Thrive

The idea of a playground has been around for many years. The very first playground was built in 1859 in Manchester, England, followed by America’s first in 1887 at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. This playground came complete with swings, slides and even a carousel.
It wasn’t until the early 1900s that playgrounds grew into a true national movement, led by private organizations and the newly formed Playground Association of America. Fittingly, the Association held its first meeting on April 12, 1906, at a YMCA in Washington, D.C. Their efforts soon caught the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, who in 1907 urged communities across the nation to build playgrounds where children could play safely under supervision.
Fast forward to today, and playgrounds have become an essential part of healthy childhoods. They are where laughter fills the air, friendships begin and imaginations run wild.
At our Northwest Family YMCA, the playground space has been a beloved part of our community for many years. As it began to show its age, we saw an opportunity to reimagine the space with modern, inclusive equipment designed to inspire active play and creativity. Now, just in time for the fall weather, our upgraded playground is ready for children to enjoy once again.
Michael Cosentino, Executive Director at the Northwest Family YMCA, and a proud girl dad of three, shares, “This new playground is more than an upgrade; it’s an investment in our future. As a father, I see every day how important play and creativity are in helping kids build confidence and curiosity. This space reflects our commitment to nurturing the spirit, mind and body of every child who comes through our doors.”
At the Y, we know playgrounds are more than swings and slides; they are classrooms without walls. Every climb, jump and game of tag helps kids build strength, confidence and coordination while developing essential social and emotional skills.
As we look ahead, we can’t wait for our youngest members to enjoy this new space. We know this playground will stand as a joyful reminder of what happens when we invest in our children, allowing them to reach their full potential, both on the playground and in life.
