Patch with a Purpose awards

In September of 2024, we announced our Patch with a Purpose partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning. This partnership is an impactful initiative highlighting the Tampa Bay Lightning and the YMCA’s unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those in our community. Patch with a Purpose effectively harnesses the strength and visibility of the Lightning brand to support the invaluable initiatives and programs offered by the Tampa YMCA, which are designed to address critical community needs.

On January 7th, our Tampa YMCA staff, board members and the community cheered on the Tampa Bay Lighting as they faced the Carolina Hurricanes. But this was no regular home game; it was our Patch for a Purpose night.

This standout night highlighted eight-year-old Alex Dalton and thirteen-year-old Asher McCook, participants in our Thrivers Club. Thrivers Club is our free 12-week pediatric cancer survivor program, designed for children ages 6-12 and 13-17. Thrivers Club is designed to help young survivors regain their strength, confidence and a sense of normalcy. For Alex and Asher, Thrivers Club has been a life-changing experience.

Alex was diagnosed with Leukemia at just 16 months old and faced immense physical challenges, including the loss of the ability to walk. Now in remission, he is working with his YMCA trainer, Isiah, to rebuild his strength, hand-eye coordination, balance and endurance, all while participating in fun, safe activities.

A little over a year ago, Asher was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a rare and serious blood condition that occurs when bone marrow doesn’t produce enough red and white blood cells. Asher struggled to communicate the health challenges he was facing, and after participating in Thrivers Club and working with his trainer, Val, he has found his voice and regained a sense of independence and self-confidence.

To honor Alex and Asher’s incredible journeys, a short video about their inspiring story was shared on the jumbotron during the game, touching the hearts of everyone in the arena. And as an unforgettable moment, Alex and Asher were given the honor of dropping the puck at the start of the game, symbolizing the hope and strength that the Patch with a Purpose initiative represents.

The Patch with a Purpose night showcased the strength and resilience of young cancer survivors like Alex and Asher and highlighted the deep connection between the YMCA and the Tampa Bay Lightning. We look forward to even more Lightning games filled with exciting Bolt energy, and with every win, we’re reminded of the difference we’re making together in the lives of children, families and seniors throughout the community.

Here’s to continuing our work together for a brighter future!
